Red Water Lily #6 – Small Bug, Big World
Red Water Lily #6-Small Bug, Big World, captures the mottled beauty of a hardy water lily while also incidentally capturing what I believe to be a newly emerged dragonfly peeking out at the above water surface world for the first time. Within ethology, there is a concept of umwelt, which essentially boils down to perceiving the world from the viewpoint of other organisms. In other words, what would the dragonfly emergent perceive as he peeks out at a world he has never yet encountered? While his instincts would attempt to allow him to survive, it hard to not wonder what he perceives as he looks out from behind the flower petal. And I use ‘he’ out of convenience. He may be a she.
