Cobia – Flathead of the Seas

Before moving to Key West I lived my life in Southern Illinois and Eastern Missouri. There, one of the most prized table fish is the flathead catfish.

In my mind the Cobia is the saltwater version of the flathead, both because of their flat head, and their recognition as a great meal.

Traveling in pods, Cobia love structure, known to hang near wrecks, and even use larger sharks as their ‘structure’. From that fact I’m guessing their flat heads don’t contain a very large brain.

But they have been around for millions of years, so they must be doing something right!

All that said he’s beautiful in his own way.
