Ms. Gag Grouper #5

Another beautiful grouper. And this one has a great life history. Notice her name as Ms. Gag Grouper. Of all of my fish heads, I can promise that this one is a young lady. Why? because all Gag Groupers start out as females, then later in life, and after spawning at least once, 5-10% of the females turn into males.

The religious right is appalled, and actively lobbying for legislation banning the event.

A final note is the fish has become dangerously overfished to near depletion in some fisheries. They congregate during spawning season making them easy targets, and the juveniles are killed as bycatch during commercial shrimping.

Unfortunately, like many species, their fate lies in our hands.
