The Shy Poke
I grew up in Southern Illinois, with a small pond, and associated wildlife located 200 feet from my back door. One of my earliest nature ‘lessons’ as a very young child was the ‘fact’ that Shy Pokes (Great Blue Herons) could carry away young children.
Despite the risk, I somehow survived frequent encounters and the GBH remains one of my favorite birds.
